What this tool calculates
This checker compares a waist circumference with the central-obesity thresholds in China's WS/T 428 adult body-weight standard. For the tool's two sex selections, the implemented thresholds are 90 cm for men and 85 cm for women. The output states whether the entered measurement meets or exceeds the selected threshold and displays that threshold.
It is a screening comparison for Chinese adults, not a diagnosis or a general global cutoff. Waist thresholds vary across populations and guidelines, and clinical assessment includes more than one measurement.

Select the sex category used by this standard and enter waist circumference in centimetres. The tool accepts plausible finite measurements from 20 through 300 cm and rejects values outside that validation range.
Measurement technique matters. WS/T 428 defines waist circumference at a specified anatomical level rather than simply wherever a belt sits. Use a non-stretch tape, keep it horizontal, avoid compressing the skin, and follow the referenced protocol. Repeating the measurement can reveal positioning or reading error.
Method and formula
This is a threshold comparison, not a body-fat formula:
- Selected male category: meets threshold when waist ≥ 90 cm.
- Selected female category: meets threshold when waist ≥ 85 cm.
Equality counts as meeting the threshold. A male measurement of 89.9 cm is below the implemented cutoff; 90.0 cm meets it. The calculator does not interpolate risk, subtract clothing thickness, convert from an unstated unit, or combine waist with BMI.
The categories mirror the cited Chinese standard's screening rule. They should not be silently substituted for a different country's criterion.
Worked example
For the male selection with a waist of 90 cm, the comparison is 90 ≥ 90, so the result meets the central-obesity threshold.
For the female selection with a waist of 84 cm, the comparison is 84 < 85, so the result is below the implemented threshold. At 85 cm, equality would meet the threshold.
These two examples show a binary cutoff. They do not imply that health risk changes abruptly at one tenth of a centimetre or that a result below the threshold rules out metabolic risk.
How to interpret the result
A result that meets the threshold indicates that the entered measurement satisfies this standard's waist-based screening definition. It can support a conversation about broader risk assessment, which may include blood pressure, glucose, lipids, BMI, medical history, and repeated measurements.
A below-threshold result only describes this comparison. Measurement uncertainty and other risk factors still matter. Use the same protocol and similar conditions when tracking change over time rather than comparing measurements taken at different body locations.
Accuracy and limitations
The cited standard applies to adults and identifies exceptions and limitations. Pregnancy changes waist measurement, highly muscular athletes may not fit general body-composition assumptions, and children require age-specific assessment. Other ethnic or national populations can use different cutoffs. The two-option interface also cannot represent every clinical or identity context.
Tape placement, breathing, posture, clothing, and observer technique can shift a measurement. This tool cannot diagnose diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or any other condition, and it does not prescribe weight loss or treatment. Seek qualified clinical assessment when a measurement or symptom is concerning.
