Egg Boiling Time Guide
This tool returns a practical starting time for boiling a shell egg after it is placed in already boiling water. The lookup uses three choices that the interface actually collects: whether the egg starts refrigerator-cold or at room temperature, its labelled size, and the requested soft, medium, or hard result. It does not measure the egg's centre temperature or control a stove.
Method and lookup table
The result comes from a fixed lookup table, not a heat-transfer simulation. Times are counted from immersion in boiling water:

These are kitchen estimates. “Soft,” “medium,” and “hard” describe texture targets rather than verified pathogen-reduction processes.
Worked example
Select a refrigerator-cold medium egg and soft doneness. The table returns 4 minutes. A room-temperature medium egg with the same target returns 3 minutes 30 seconds.
Start a separate timer when the egg enters steadily boiling water. When the time ends, remove the egg carefully. Cooling it in cold water can slow further cooking, but the tool does not time or validate that step.
What the result means
The displayed duration is a repeatable first trial for the selected combination. If the result is consistently too soft or firm with the same cookware and egg supply, adjust future attempts in small increments and record what worked.
The lookup table is not a thermometer. Egg mass varies within a labelled size, and water temperature, cookware, burner recovery, egg age, and handling all affect the final texture.
Food-safety and timing limits
- FDA consumer guidance recommends cooking eggs until both the yolk and white are firm. A soft or medium texture can therefore carry more foodborne-illness risk than a fully cooked egg.
- People at higher risk of severe foodborne illness—including young children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with weakened immune systems—should follow advice from their health authority and avoid undercooked eggs unless an appropriate pasteurized product is used.
- Use clean, uncracked eggs kept under proper refrigeration. Discard eggs with damaged shells or unusual odour or appearance.
- The table assumes immersion in boiling water and does not account for unusual pressure, equipment, cooking method, or local water behaviour. Verify doneness rather than treating the displayed time as a safety guarantee.
